KISS OF LIFE was removed from KCON LA 2025 following backlash over a controversial livestream portraying Black culture. Apologies were issued by the group.

Just five days after their addition to the KCON LA 2025 roster, KISS OF LIFE has been dropped from the event, prompting widespread speculation among fans.
On May 16, KCON LA organizers issued a statement confirming the group would no longer participate. The announcement read, “After thorough discussions and exploration of all participation options, KCON and S2 Entertainment have jointly decided that KISS OF LIFE will not appear at KCON LA 2025. We apologize to fans who anticipated the performance and seek your understanding.”
The statement did not provide specific reasons for the removal. However, the timing closely follows backlash stemming from a controversial livestream held in April celebrating member Julie’s birthday. During that event, KISS OF LIFE adopted an old-school hip-hop theme, drawing criticism for their portrayal of Black culture.
Viewers noted the use of exaggerated mannerisms, culturally significant braided hairstyles treated as costumes, and a parody rap name, Lil Taco. The livestream quickly became a subject of debate on social media platforms including TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), with many accusing the group of reducing Black culture to stereotypes.
In response, S2 Entertainment released an apology on May 4 expressing regret over the use of stereotypical imagery. Following this, the members shared handwritten apology letters on their social media accounts on May 6. Despite these efforts, some fans expressed that the apologies did not adequately address the concerns raised or demonstrate full comprehension of the issues involved.
Neither KCON nor S2 Entertainment explicitly linked the controversy to the group’s removal. Nonetheless, many fans interpret the “mutual decision” as a consequence of the backlash.
KCON LA 2025 is scheduled for August 1-3, with further artist announcements forthcoming. While some fans are disappointed by KISS OF LIFE’s exit, others view the situation as a sign of increasing accountability within the K-pop industry, especially for artists performing on international platforms.
